The Rescue Reader Program was developed and implemented in 2012 by the City of Tulare Fire Department to promote literacy to elementary school students. This program rewards the student in each grade, at every elementary school in the city, that has the highest AR (Accelerated Reader) score for the school year with a trip to school in the Fire Truck. The winning students are picked up from their house and driven to school in the Fire Truck. The students arrive to school in grand fashion with the entire student body awaiting their arrival outside. All of the winning students at each school are entered into a drawing for a special backpack which has the City of Tulare Fire Department patch embroidered on it. The goal of the program is to get children excited about reading and to offer the students an award for their hard work.
